The Faculty/Consultant Guide to Printer Fixing

Note: You must be in the operator group in order to use the operator program on Turing. These instructions assume that you can use operator. If not, please find a consultant or staff member to help you.

  1. Check that the printer has paper. Check for paper jams. Try resetting the printer.
  2. If the printer itself doesn't seem to be the problem, then perhaps the print queue on Turing is having problems. Run the lpc program: lpc
  3. At the lpc> prompt type these commands:
    down printername
Disables queueing and stops printing on the printer.
    up printername
Enables queueing and stops printing on the printer.
  4. Now check the status of your printer by typing status printername at the lpc> prompt. The queueing and printing should both be enabled.
  5. Exit lpc with the quit command.
  6. If a printer still doesn't work, you can try restarting the print daemon by issuing the lpbounce command in operator. Note that print jobs on all printers may be lost.
  7. Exit operator using quit.

Other commands are available in lpc. Type help while using lpc or check the lpc(8) manual page.
