How To Use FrameMaker
FrameMaker is a desktop publishing program designed to run under the X
Window System on the workstations.
-
To use FrameMaker, first you must be logged into a workstation and running
one of the windows interfaces. To start the program from X Windows, simply
type
% frame
at the prompt.
-
After you start the program, a window will open up with several options;
the most important of these are
open
and
new.
If you want a new file, click on
new;
if you want to open an old file, click
on
open.
When opening a new file, you have several choices. Frame asks you what
kind of file template you would like. You should take some time to look
through the various templates, but the best choice is probably
BlankPaper.
You can also pick Custom Document if you aren't happy with any of the
choices. Double-click on your choice of template, and the document will
open for you.
If you are opening an existing file, FrameMaker will give you a list of the
directories in your home directory as well as a blank space. You can either
type in the name of the file, or double click on a directory to move down
through the directory tree. Once you have found the file you want to open,
double click on it.
-
Occasionally Frame will tell you that you don't have a license. Should this
happen, don't panic. You will see a window with the message
You do not have a license.
It is easy to rectify this problem. First, look near the bottom of the
window for the License Server Host box. Click on the box and type
turing
since the license server program runs on
turing.
Next,
click on the Get License box in the upper right corner of the window. This
should solve the problem.
-
When typing documents in FrameMaker, you may wish to do things like change
font style and size. In the
BlankPaper
template are several available font styles for you to use. To use them,
click on the paragraph symbol in the upper right corner of your document
window. A window entitled
Catalog
and a list of available fonts will come up. To use the fonts, click on the
font and start typing. Note, however, that hitting the Return key will
change the font you use back to the default font, which is
Body.
A second catalog is available if you click on the C symbol, this one with
emphasis (italics), header and footer options.
-
FrameMaker has some graphics capability. To see the graphics menu, click on
the right triangle in the upper left corner of your document window. FrameMaker
also has a mathematical equation menu, which you can see after clicking on the
sigma character under the triangle.
-
To save files in Frame, click on the
File
menu and select the
Save
option.
Frame tells you whether or not your document needs saving.
Frame is all ready to print documents to the laser printer.
-
To print to the
laser printer select the
File
menu and pick the
Print
selection. Click the
OK
button. You can also print to a PostScript file. To do this, click on the
box entitled
Print Only To File:
and type in the full path of the file you would like to print to.
-
To exit FrameMaker, find the options window that
first appeared when you started the program and click on the Exit
selection. If you have not saved your document, Frame will ask you if you
would like to do so. Then Frame will make sure that you really want to
exit; click on the OK box to exit.
Notes:
For more information on using FrameMaker, refer to the FrameMaker manuals
