Febrary 8, 2008: A Student Endorsement
As part of publicising our REU site, I ended up corresponding with one of the students from last year's REU program, J. Crouser from Smith College and got some totally unsolicited raves about how great an experience our REU was last year. It seemed to be crying out to post here, and so I decided to ask for a quote I could put on the site, and this is what I got:
“This program was one of the most enriching and rewarding experiences of my college career. We had so much freedom to explore the field, to pursue our own interests. Your research is really your own.”
I'm not sure if it isn't a bit cheesy to put testimonials on the website, but given how much some of the students enjoyed our program, it seems a shame not to flaunt it.
Febrary 7, 2008: Our Site Listed on NSF CS REU website
As the last piece of the puzzle the NSF is now listing us on their list of CS REUs.
Febrary 5, 2008: REU Award Official
Athough we heard on January 25 that our grant application was successful, the award wasn't officially made until today. Now it's properly offical, which let's me breath a little easier — for example, it's good to know that we got all the money we asked for.
January 31, 2008: First Applicant
Wow, we got our first applicant within 24 hours of putting the site up.
January 30, 2008: REU Website Goes Live
We're out of beta testing and our site is now visible to the world. Let's hope everything continues to work.
January 28, 2008: Beta Site Goes Up!
I'm itching to put the site up for a mass audience, but it's an entirely new site this year, including online applications and a whole new way to manage the site content, so for now it's only accessible to a small number of people who know the secret URL for the beta site.
Putting everything together was a lot of fun. Sometime I might post about how it all works behind the scenes.
January 25, 2008: All engines go!
Finally we have word from the NSF that our REU grant renewal has been successful (although the “official announcment” won't come for a few days yet), and so we can now start really start preparing in earnest for this summer.
