Random Consultant Stuff

Important files you might need some day:

Consultant Hours
/staff/etc/consult_combos -- the combos to the different CS labs
/staff/etc/logged_in.msg -- letter to send people who forgot to log out in the terminal room
/staff/etc/killed_proc.msg -- the message to send people when you kill one of their processes
/staff/etc/phones/phones.list -- a list of phone numbers including the the cs cell phone, staff, and other important people

Good resources and helpful commands:
  • man -k <keyword> -- brings up a list of man pages with references to the keyword entered
  • man -s <section number> <command> -- brings up the indicated section of the man page for the command
  • qref (type from the command line or get it from the web) -- automatically brings up the qref pages
  • syslog -- what flags mean, what goes where, and why
  • top -- shows the processing being run and by who (to allow the consult to monitor (and watch for evil runaways)
  • request -i -- enters request in interactive mode. Once in interactive mode, type '?' for help
  • request -h -- to get help form the command line
  • locate --finds files

  • Logging in as a consultant:
To login as a consultant, type

    ssh consult@turing
    or
    su consult

It will take a little while to log you in (ie. have to wait about 10 seconds)

    Sending mail to yourself:
(for when people leave their terms logged in without locking)

    pine `whoami`     < - those are backticks
    arrow keys down
ctrl-r to read file, use path /staff/etc/logged_in.msg
fill in the text and send it

    or

    cat /staff/etc/logged_in.msg | pine $USER,consult
    if you can remember that!

    Using Operator:
    help gets help
keep in mind that you can't do anything to staff members or faculty's stuff
Printer fixing information can be found in a qref document.
    Machine Room
To check the temperature, press "What is" and then the button called "Pause Temp"
    Making a Web Page
There is a qref that helps you set up your page.
You can also go to Sizzling Jalfrezi for additional HTML help.
