Random Consultant Stuff
Important files you might need some day:
Consultant Hours
/staff/etc/consult_combos
-- the combos to the different CS labs
/staff/etc/logged_in.msg
-- letter to send people who forgot to log out in the terminal room
/staff/etc/killed_proc.msg
-- the message to send people when you kill one of their processes
/staff/etc/phones/phones.list
-- a list of phone numbers including the the cs cell phone,
staff, and other important people
Good resources and helpful commands:
man -k <keyword>
-- brings up a list of man pages with references to the keyword entered
man -s <section number> <command>
-- brings up the indicated section of the man page for the command
qref (type from the command line or get it from the web)
-- automatically brings up the qref pages
syslog
-- what flags mean, what goes where, and why
top
-- shows the processing being run and by who (to allow the consult to
monitor (and watch for evil runaways)
request -i
-- enters request in interactive mode.
Once in interactive mode, type '?' for help
request -h
-- to get help form the command line
locate
--finds files
Logging in as a consultant:
To login as a consultant, type
ssh consult@turing
or
su consult
It will take a little while to log you in (ie. have to wait about 10 seconds)
Sending mail to yourself:
(for when people leave their terms logged in without locking)
pine `whoami` <
- those are backticks
arrow keys down
ctrl-r to read file, use path /staff/etc/logged_in.msg
fill in the text and send it
or
cat /staff/etc/logged_in.msg | pine $USER,consult
if you can remember that!
Using Operator:
help gets help
keep in mind that you can't do anything to staff members or faculty's
stuff
Printer fixing information can be found in a
qref document.
Machine Room
To check the temperature, press "What is" and then the button
called "Pause Temp"
