Harvey Mudd College goes to Grace Hopper

The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing is a bi-anual conference aimed at brining together women in or interested in the field of computer science.  This year, we have received a grant to fund 20 scholarships to attend this conference.  Transportation, conference registration, hotel, and many meals are all completely covered, so with the exception of a couple of meals, attending the conference will be totally free for you!

Below we give you more details about the conference, the trip and what you should do if you want to come:

Who can sign up to go?  Do I have to be a CS major?
We encourage all interested students to sign up.  You do NOT have to be a CS major!

How will you choose who gets to go?
It is likely that we will be able to fund everyone who wants to go.  However, if more than 20 people sign up, preference will be given to female students (especially first year students), and students who can attend all (or most) of the conference.

Can Pomona/Scripps/Pitzer/CMC students sign up?
Students from Pomona/Scripps/Pitzer/CMC may be able to receive funding if the trip does not fill with Harvey Mudd students.  Pomona is organizing their own group (we'll go down together), so Pomona students should check with the CS profs there.  But if you are interested, please do sign up with me and we'll let you know a week before the conference if we have funding.

Where and when is the conference?
The conference is in San Diego, on October 4-7.  We will leave on the afternoon of the 4th, and return on the afternoon/evening of the 7th.  You will miss two days of classes (Thursday and Friday).  The exact time we will leave is TBD based on people's schedules.

What if I will miss important classes/labs/etc?

We will talk to Dean Cave to try to arrange policies for extensions and make up work.  Let us know what you will need to miss and we'll help you work something out.

What if I can't go to the whole conference?
If you can't go to the whole conference, we may be able to work something out.  Please apply anyway, and we'll see what we can do.

Sounds good!  How do I sign up?
Send an email to Christine Alvarado (alvarado@cs.hmc.edu), letting her know that you are interested by Friday, September 22 (at midnight).  IMPORTANT: Please use the subject line "Grace Hopper Conference."  Please include your year, your school and whether or not you would be able to attend the entire conference (and if not, what days you would be able to attend).  We will publish the final list of who will go on  Wednesday, Sept 27 (one week before the conference).
