Nathaniel Sloan Dear Mr. Sloan: Thank you for your E-Mail message to the Secretary. You offered your comments about the new one-dollar coin that will be released into circulation in early 2000. We greatly appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts with us. It is important for officials in the Treasury Department to have the participation of concerned citizens such as yourself so that they can take everyone's interests into account. Public Law 105-124 required that the Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Congress, select appropriate designs for the obverse and reverse sides of the dollar coin. You now probably know that on July 29, 1998, Secretary Rubin accepted the recommendation of the Dollar Coin Advisory Committee that the new dollar coin contain an image representing Sacajawea, the Native American woman whose presence was essential to the success of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The Dollar Coin Advisory Committee, established to recommend a design concept for the obverse side of the coin, recommended a design of Liberty represented by a Native American woman. The United States Dollar Coin Act of 1997 required the Department of the Treasury to place into circulation a new dollar coin similar in size to the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin, golden in color with a distinctive edge. The actual design of the new coin will now be created by sculptor/engravers at the United States Mint. We have carefully noted your comments and shared them with the appropriate officials. This will help them in deciding the best course of action to take during development of the new coin. Thank you again for writing to the Secretary. We greatly appreciate your interest in the United States monetary system. Sincerely, Dale M. Servetnick Deputy Director, Office of Public Correspondence http://www.ustreas.gov/opc/
