Helpful information on using NT in the graphics lab: - logging in - running the query analzyer - mapping turing drives - logging out Logging in ========== a) log in as yourself. you use the same login & password as on turing. - on the login screen, if you want, you can select the openwindows session under Options->Session to get the same windowing setup as you use on turing. Otherwise, you'll be using CDE. b) Once you're logged in, open some form of xterm or console, and run start-nt. c) NT will boot. It will take a while. You can watch it do wierd things. - if NT fails to boot, or asks you about making some sort of drive, cancel and ask Dave Meyer for help. d) Once NT has booted, log yourself in to NT. - your password is the same as your login - you will be forced to change your password upon logging in the first time. - the mouse doesn't work on the login window (and we don't know why). - remember tab & shift-tab move between fields. e) You can close the little box. NT will then fix some user-specific settings for you. Note that the mouse works now. - note that these settings are set PER MACHINE, i.e., if you use one of the graphics machines and then log into another to use NT, you'll have to do the startup thing all over again (although your password will be the same as what you changed it to, not your login). Running the Query Analyzer ========================== a) The Query Analyzer can be found under Start->Programs->Microsoft SQL 7.0 Client->Query Analyzer (except for Riddler, in which case the path is a little different. Since you're a CS major, I'll assume you can figure out the slight difference in startup location.) b) Upon starting the Query Analyzer, you should click the little box with the three dots next to the host name to get a list. From the list, select CS-PC6 and hit OK. c) Click to put a checkmark in the "Start SQL Server if stopped" box. d) Click "Use Windows NT authentication" e) Click OK f) Now, you're in. In the DB drop-down menu, select the one that corresponds to your login name (some of them may be spelled a touch different). If you have a problem with this (i.e., it says you're not authorized, etc.), let Prof. Hodas know, and it will be fixed. Getting turing files ==================== a) Right-click on Network Neighborhood b) Select Map Network Drive c) in the Pathname box (the second one), type in \\localhost\home\<> where <> is replaced with your turing login. Ex: \\localhost\home\dave d) Click OK. e) If desired, close the window after it pops up. Note: As with other things in NT, this drive mapping is local to the machine on which you added it. In other words, if you log into another graphics machine to use NT, you'll have to map it again. Logging out =========== a) Select Start->Shut Down b) Select "Shut down the computer?" and click Yes c) wait for about a minute for Windows to shut down correctly. d) when a box pops up saying "It is now safe to turn off your computer", chose File->Exit from the blue menu bar along the top of the NT window frame. Click OK on the warning box. WARNING: If you do not wait for the "It is now safe..." message, and Exit the system prematurely, you will likely hose the NT disk image on that machine. This is a NASTY no no!!! Note: If you instead want to restart the computer, you'll have to use the enter key to activate the reset button -- the mouse doesn't work on this box.crosoft SQL 7.0 Client->Query Analyzer (except for Riddler, in which case the path is a little different.
