Concept Assessment

What makes Water Commando: The Scripps Run a good game?

In class, the students came up with a list of criteria that defines a well-made game. Our game meets the following criteria that make Water Commando a badass game.

Graphics will be suave because Ben and Forest are most highly skilled in Photoshop. The background bitmap will be a accurate as well as aesthetically pleasing. The characters will not be cheesy polygons but richly colored cartoon characters. In the allotted time given too us, the game’s graphics will beat any of the POP demo games.

Sound will not be elaborate but definitely present for most actions, such as squirting noises for the gun, popping noises for the balloon, screaming noises for the wet Scripps girls, and shouts of glee for when they escape. The sounds will be quite comedic because they will be girls squealing when they’re soaked.

Controlling the player will be easy to learn because the controls are intuitive. Up is up, down is down, left is left, right is right. Aiming is easy because it is just point with the mouse in the direction and left click for squirting the gun, while right click will launch a water balloon. So, the controls are simple but not too simple where it is boring.

The game difficulty is similar to Duck Hunt where the in later rounds Scripps girls run faster. Also to complete the later rounds, the player needs to hit more girls. This requires the player to become better as the game progresses, which is a key element to a well-made game.

Not multiplayer, but who cares. High score can add competition between players.

Plot wise, mudders would find the story captivating because most of the students know of and have participated in the Scripps Run event. The connectivity adds another element of enjoyment.

Uniqueness? The other games in our class are all biters. Ours is pimp. We’ve never seen a game with our control system with the mouse aiming independent of keypad movement for an overhead game.

The swarming AI algorithm for the girls is easy to write, efficient to run and will give rise to very complex and interesting behavior. Running away from the commando will make the game challenging, and unlike almost every other game where enemy movement is a rigidly pre-defined path, this complex behavior will be different every time.

Since each round, the girls will run faster and you will need to catch more of them, the pace of the game is constantly getting faster and more frantic… we bring the action baby.
