Play Game
You are a water commando, running around Harvey Mudd College, shooting your super soaker or water balloons at Scrippsies. The object of the game is to soak as enough Scripps girls each round to advance to the next round. A total score is kept of how many girls have been soaked across all rounds and the goal of the game is to get the highest possible total score. There is no limit to the number of rounds; the game ends when you dont meet the round
requirements.
Rounds of Play
Each round, you mush soak a certain percentage of the scrippsies that increases each round.
Rounds get harder in other ways, including faster scrippsie movement, larger numbers of scrippsies and smarter ai (ie greater aviodance of player).
Scrippsies start at one end of the college and run to the other end, where they are safe and officially count as being missed by the player. When
all of the scrippsies have either gotten to the goal or been squirted, the round ends.
Scoring
Scoring in this game will be relatively simple. For each girl soaked, you will receive a point. This will be displayed in a score counter in the upper
left corner of the screen. There will also be a a counter that shows progress within the round. At the beginning of the round there will be a row
of small pink scrippsie icons, repesenting the number of girls still running around. As girls are soaked, their icon turns blue. If they get to the
goal, their icon changes to a happy icon of them dancing.
Commando Character
An overhead view that shows him holding a water baloon and a water gun.
Commando Movement
The player is free to move throughout all points of the map at all times by using the arrow keys to walk in that direction. No matter which direction the water commando is facing, pressing the up arrow will cause the commando to walk upwards. The same applies to the other directional arrow keys. The style of movement will not be drift, but just plain walking movement. This means the player travels at a constant speed. When you stop pressing a direction key, you stop moving in that direction.
Feasibility
The movement will be easy to configure because Pink Monster has the same movement, but only horizontally. In Water Commando, the player will be able to move both horizontally and vertically. If both a horizontal and vertical arrow key is pressed, the commando will move diagonally at 45 degrees. The movement is very feasible because it has been done for us in other programs.
Weapons
The commando will basically have two types of weapons in this game
-super soaker: this will just shoot a stream of water a certain distance in the direction the commando is facing. This will be similar to bullets in space invaders, but a more rapid fire to make it look a stream.
-water balloons: will be a bomb like weapon with a fixed radius and can be thrown a maximum distance. The number of bombs will be limited. There will be various places on the map to restock the bombs. Where the water balloon lands, a group of bullets will explode radially outward for a certain radius. This will simulate a bomb.
Feasibility: The super soaker will be very similar to space invaders, however the water balloon is not present in any of the games, but will be simple to implement because the concept is based off the bullet.
Shooting/Aiming
The shooting and aiming will be controlled with the mouse. Wherever the mouse points, that is the direction the commando will be aiming. Left click will fire the super soaker while right click will launch the water balloon. The water balloon will land where the mouse is located when right clicked.
Feasibility
the mouse aiming option is demonstrated in asteroids.
Map
The map is of Harvey Mudd Campus. The bitmap contains the quad dorms and continues until Atwood dorm.
We will make this bitmap in photoshop from either an arial photo or our own imaginations. Either way, it will have a cartoonish look.
The screen will not show the entire map all at once, but only a section. The map will scroll centered on the commando’s movements. The map will not wrap around, so the commando will not be able to move off the outer boundaries of the map.
Feasability
We know how to use photoshop to make the images; this is feasable. Also, the ballworld game has a large bitmap background that scrolls as the level progresses, depending on the character's movement. This is exactly what we wish to do.
Obstacles/ Buildings
Although the map will just be a bitmap in the background, the water commando will not be able to walk over buildings, trees, or Scripps girls. Boundaries are set for where the commando will be not allowed to walk to make the game more realistic.
Feasibility
Collision detection is done with bounding spheres in POP, so each wall can just be a row of small spheres. Each tree can be a big sphere and each target a small sphere. This is feasible because in the Dam Builder game, there are walls that player or bullets do not penetrate. Also, for the Scripps girls, they will just be like asteroids in Asteroids.
Targets (Scripps Girls)
Scripps Girls will run around the map, starting in a general area near North and East and walk/migrate as a flock towards Atwood.
The girls will have a primitive flocking AI, so they will run away from bullets and the commando, but toward the average position of all scrippsies,
toward their final goal (or intermediate points along a path to their goal,) and away from each hother and obstacles so they dont bump into them. When they run away, they’ll run at a higher speed, otherwise they will just walk in a nonlinear path from one end of the map to the other.
When a scrippsie is soaked, she will shrink to nothing.
Feasibility
Although the flocking sounds complicated, but it actually just boils down to vector addition, and its already implemented in the asteroids game for some reason. It is also possible to add animated bitmaps for the characters. If there is no way to scale sprites, we will just make a series of smaller bitmaps.
Sounds
The Scripps girls will make some kind of yelp or scream when they are shot and also a screem of glee when they escape. The super soaker and water balloons will have a weapon noise associated with them. Other noises may be associated with the water commando. If background music can be added, that would be sweet.
Feasibility
Sounds are implemented in all the games so they will simple to associate to our game.
