History of FnordJr2005|
image:../../../~afarmer/fnord.jpeg In Fall of 2005 MorganConbere and BenJencks set out to get FnordJr back up and running. This page will document that process, and the current status of Fnord (as we lovingly refer to him as). Interestingly, neither Morgan nor Ben really play on Fnord. FnordJr is basically a PC connected to a Wells-Gardner Monitor with a custom control set up wired to a J-pac board that has USB output. It runs AdvanceMame/AdvanceMenu? in SVGAlib on Gentoo Linux. Approximate Specs for FnordJr. (in case anyone needs/wants to know): *Athlon XP 1800+ *256 MB DDR (2100?) RAM *ATI Rage128pro? *Wells-Gardner K3100 19 inch arcade Monitor *Soundblaster soundcard *Soundblaster Live! soundcard *Generic Nic *Generic 2.1 speaker system. *40 GB hard drive *DVD drive (why? I don't know) Future Items: *60 GB hard drive (I have it, need to add it --Morgan) *New controls (6 buttons, 2 players, coin buttons, new joysticks) *Volume control knob (any ideas?) Fnord is running linux kernel 2.6.15 currently (March 28, 2005). We used Gentoo Linux because it is easier than installing everything from source, and other packaging systems (Debian and Ubuntu, for example) do not have many of the packages we require in their repositories. We are transitioning Fnord to running everything on top of X11 instead of SVGA, since Xorg has better emulator support, and allows us to do all sorts of fun things. Currently, the Snes emulator running on Fnord uses X11. (We are using ZSNES, but the emulator has a funny bug that prevents running it in SVGAlib mode, even though it "officially" supports it. Even though it supports SVGAlib, it always uses X11 keyboard mapping. I encourage anyone to go fix the problem in the code and submit a patch to the developers.) * Is New Fnord the same Fnord in a new case, or an entirely new Fnord? |
