For anyone whos interested in Chrono Trigger, here are a few tips and tricks i've picked up along the way. I'm sure these are all repeats from the latest FAQ, so don't expect anything startleingly new and revealing.
There is some preaty cool stuff that you can steal from monsters using Ayla. I've compiled a list of the most usefull things i've found in the later part of the game. These come in (aproximatly) chronological appearence in the game.
Dalton always seems to give you a power Meal
The golems usually give you a magic tab, but i couldn't get anything from GolemBoss
The monsters in BlackBird don't seem to give you anything
Queen: First time she gives you Megalixer (as does the Mammon Machine) In her second incarnation, you can get a Megalixer from the head, a PrismDress from the left hand, and a Prism Helm from the right.
Heres a hint on something i missed out on the first two times through the game, if you try to open a chest in 600 when it has a duplicate in 1000, it will say something inside is reacting to the pendant. If you choose not to open the chest, and THEN go forward to 1000 and open the same chest, the item inside will be powered up. This is how you get Marle's most powerful weapon. (At least the most powerful one i've found)
Another short hint. Remember when your party got captured by Dalton and was striped of all their weapons and equipment? Not being the sadistic sort, the programers thought it would be kinda of nice if Dalton didn't chop off Ayla's hands however. Unfortunatly for the guards, this leaves Ayla quite capable of beating them up without resorting to getting any of her equipment back :)
If you jump to Lavos through the Telepod, the Lavos Shell has 10000 HP
In the creature form, the Head has about 22000 HP, the left hand has 10000, and the right 12000
In the Bit form, the left bit has 2000, the body has 10000, and the right bit has about 30000
So far, the fastest way i've found to kill lavos is to use Chrono, Marle, and Lucca. Equip Chrono with the prism specs, and a haste hat. Equip Marle and Lucca with prism specs or sunshades (depending on how many times you've been through the game)
After you've saved the game, but before you fight lavos, pump all your extra magic tabs into chrono. If you haven't gotten everyone up to sixteen speed yet, use all your speed tabs on the three, starting with chrono.
For the first two battle, depending on how strong your characters are, it may be over so quickly that you don't need to bother with any prep work. For the last battle, you want Marle to cast haste on Lucca and herself. The characters should also use Shields and Barriers on themselves. Have Chrono kill thd take two or three hits. Then, have Chrono cast Luminare, and Marle and Lucc does 10,000 damage. This makes preaty short work of Lavos.
(I'm assuming you've already beaten the game once, and therefore have access to the Telepod warp)
That seems to be the ten endings the programers claimed, at least by my count. I don't know if the programers were using the same count or not :) Judging byidden a dozen more endings away in the nooks and craneys of the game.
The Ending That Should Have Been:
(For those who only care about the game information, and don't want to hear me complaining about the lousy job the programers did, you should quit now :)
After working my way through the Ocean Palace, i watched Lavos being summoned, and with my advanced party, easily defeated him. And what did i get?
The Programers Ending!
What!?! The Programers Ending?
That ending makes lots of sense for when you jump into Telepod five minutes after starting a New+ game. You get an overpowered, kinda silly ending for beating Lavos with an overpowered party in a kinda silly way. Throughout the rest of the game, they tried to make the ending fit in with the plot as it has currently developed.
This would seem to be the appropriate time for one of the best endings in the game! You've just defeated Lavos as he was being summoned by the Queen of Zeal. Theoretically, you've broken Lavos' control over her, you've saved Schala, Janus, and the three Gurus, not to mention the entire Magic Kingdom of Zeal! And one would hope that after this terrible experience, the Enlightened Ones would be a little more enlightened now :)
This is also the only time in the game when a confrontation with Lavos is directly written into the plot, instead of your party deciding, hey, we're bored, lets go jomp on telepod/hop in bucket/time warp to Lavos. Perhaps the programers didn't have enough imagination to figure out an ending where the Magic Kingdom of Zeal is not cut down in its prime in 12,000 bc, and where there is a new equality between the Enlightened Ones and the Earthbound Ones. However given the imagination they showed in the rest of the game, and in the other endings, you would think that this wouldn't have been a problem.
