Magazines and Periodicals
Hey- everyone needs something to read in the bathroom...
There are many excellent magazines available that deal with the Macintosh computer, and several of these give you a great deal of coverage online as well. Follow these links for Macintosh tips, articles, and information.
These are listed in alphabetical order, by the way.
- AppleDirections: This resource is primarily intended for use by Macintosh developers, though there is plenty of generic information here as well. Basically, AppleDirections is Apple's monthly magazine designed to keep you up-to-date on recent happenings at Apple, and where the company is moving in the future.
- develop: The Apple Technical Journal: develop is a purely developer-oriented quarterly publication. There is much information available; typically, an issue will contain 3-6 large articles, each dealing with a different aspect of Macintosh programming, plus several smaller features and
Q&A sessions.
- Mac*Chat: Mac*Chat is a magazine dedicated to Macintosh solutions for use in publishing situations. If this describes you, you might want to check it out. :-) It is distributed as a free weekly EMail via a mailing list.
- MacChicago: An online resource for Macintosh users in the Windy City.
- MacNow: (formerly MacMagazine). MacNow seems to be a standard Macintosh news maganize with some cool articles. It is, however, signficiantly cheaper than, say, MacUser (like, 100%; it's free). You can subscribe to a monthly mailing (in DOCMaker format), and you can also subscribe to a 'news' list.
- Mac Net Journal 2 (MNJ2): (formerly Mac Net Journal). MNJ2 seems to be very well-put-together and up-to-date. As with MacNow, you can get a DOCMaker version mailed to you ever month (do I sense a welcome trend in magazine prices? :-). They handle reviews, news, and other important Macintosh information.
- MacSense: A very impressive monthly magainze. Once again, it's free for the download, though only CompuServe and America OnLine customers can join the automatic mailing list. There is a lot of great information in this maganize; everything from Apple news to game reviews.
- MacTech: An invaluable resource for Macintosh developers. They claim to have over 1200 pages devoted to programming the Macintosh (though I didn't count :-). You can check out upcoming issues, recent articles, or the file archives. If you're even thinking of writing any Mac software, you should definitely take a look around this site.
- MacToday: A no-holds-barred Mac-Loving PC-hating propaganda-spouting Evangelista's dream. They are pro-Mac and proud of it. :-) Some great info hidden in here, though.
- MacUser Online: This magazine is MacWEEK's kid brother. It's prettier, since it's aimed at the average or business user rather than the power user/developer. However, its content can be a bit basic at times... and its online area is nothing to scream about. Still, any amount of Mac information is better than none... :-)
- MacWEEK Online: Get up-to-the-minute news, tips, and information. A great deal of the content of this (rather expensive, normally :-) magazine is reproduced each week. Check in often. :-)
- TidBITS: Dartmouth University is the home of this free look at Macintosh news and applications.
