December 12, 1996:

Earlier today, Sleep Deprivation Software released the Power Set Standard Window Definition Procedure (WDEF) for an open beta test. This release marks the first in a series of software projects designed to make programming the Macintosh fun and easy without hampering creativity or individual style.

What does this release include?

This release includes PowerPC- and 68K- native versions of the WDEF; currently, these are available separately. Future versions will combine these into one "fat" release which will automatically choose the appropriate platform.

What features are provided?

Features provided by the Standard WDEF include full compliance with the Apple Grayscale Appearance, including all of the standard window definition types (modal dialog boxes, movable modal dialog boxes, modeless dialog boxes, and document windows (with and without size and zoom boxes). Additionally, a "collapse box" (popularised by the Aaron extension by Greg Landweber) is implemented in those types where it was appropriate.

Are there any known bugs?

The only problem of which we are currently aware is an incompatibility of sorts with WindowShade. Due to the algorithm it uses to "roll up" windows (which assumes a one-pixel-thick bottom border), windows created using the Standard WDEF have about six lines of superfluous pixels attached to the bottom of the title bar in its collapsed state. This is purely a cosmetic issue -- it's perfectly safe to use WindowShade if you don't mind these pixels.

How much does it cost?

Power Set is available for a free download (see below). If you wish to distribute any or all of the Power Set components with your application, send EMail requesting licensing costs.

Where do I get a copy?

Proceed to the Power Set Download Page to download either version.
