Details of Data Collection
The sound files were created on Monday, July 14, 2003. They were created using
a Sony ECM-MS957 Stereo Condenser Microphone, the program
Audacity, and a Mac.
The sampling rate was 44.1 kHz. Professor Belinda Thom was the violinist.
The sound files consist of:
- A low G (G3) played with no vibrato,
both legato and
staccato
articulations. The data file containing
this is entitled G1.wav.
- An A4, first played on the open string (no vibrato), with
both legato and staccato articulations. Next, it was fingered
(not played on the open string), and played both with and
without vibrato, and was recorded with legato and staccato
articulations for both cases. The data file is called A1.wav.
- An F#4, recorded with and without vibrato, both staccato and
legato articulations. The data file is called FSharp.wav.
- An A5, recorded with and without vibrato, both staccato and
legato articulations. The data file is called HighA.wav.
- A chromatic scale, from G3 to B5, played legato
with vibrato. The data file is called ChromaticVib1.wav.
- A chromatic scale, from G3 to B5, played legato with
no vibrato. The data file is called chromaticNoVib.wav.
The single pitches were played using a triplet rhythm, at a
fairly slow tempo (roughly 60 beats per minute).
