Installing Xming

Download xming from Sourceforge.net

Open the file to install Xming. You should see the welcome screen below. Click through the next few screens and leave all the options alone for now.

If you want an icon on your desktop for Xlaunch select it here

Please uncheck the box at the end, we will be using Xlaunch and starting Xming at the end of the install causes no end of problems

Starting Xming

Go into your start menu and start Xlaunch as shown below

You should now see the following. Just click next for now. If you want to do this again and change the way remote X windows are viewed with your machine you can play around with the other options. The default "Multiple Windows" is the way the lab machines work though.

Make sure to select "Start a Program" before clicking next

Select "Using PuTTY (plink.exe)" to un-grey the boxes at the bottom. Type the name of the bio computer, your username and password as shown

Leave this screen as shown and just click next

This screen lets you save your configuration (The computer name, username, and password you just set) into a file so that Xlaunch can load it quickly later. It may be convenient to save this file to your desktop and double click on it to log in.

When you click finish you may have to tell the computer "yes" regarding a key, then you will see the following screen. This works just the way it works in the lab.
