This could be for a few reasons. Are your dodgeballs hitting anything else first, such as an obstacle, a wall, or the arena floor?

When a ball leaves the arena, it is moved back to where it started.

In order to make the game more realistic, Homer is a clumsy oaf, who sometimes shoots at weird times and places.
