Week 8 Activity (Option 2): Colloquium talk @ Pomona
This week, Pomona College hosts a talk by Adam Smith, from UC Santa Cruz. The talk begins at 4:15 PM on Thursday.
Also this week, we have a Nelson Series talk by Ruha Benjamin at 6:00 PM on the same day (with a reception beforehand at 5:15 PM). You can attend either or both talks.
Because this talk takes place at a different time from normal colloquium talks, we have slightly different rules for this week for students enrolled in CS Colloquium (CS 195). Regardless of which section you're in:
- If you reasonably can attend the Nelson talk live and in person in its timeslot, we would be strongly encourage you to do so. It matters a lot to have a good audience for the speaker, and it's a great opportunity to see a talk by a world-class speaker.
- If you cannot attend that talk live and in person in its timeslot, you may watch the recording of the talk instead. The recording will be posted here after the event.
- Alternatively, or in addition, you may attend the this talk. This talk will not be recorded.
Slicing Interactive Software to Create Playable Quotes
Abstract
A quote of a book is a tiny slice of the original text that can be read by those without access to the original work. How can we cut up the raw code and data of software to produce a sense of quotes that allows audiences to re-experience interesting interactions with that software? How can we make quoting software as easy as taking a screenshot? This talk introduces the idea of playable quotes and applies it to videogames for the Game Boy and desktop PC platforms. Just-in-time binary instrumentation techniques combine with virtual machine snapshots to allow anyone to quote interactive software.
About Adam Smith
Dr. Adam Smith is an assistant professor of Computational Media at UC Santa Cruz. He teaches videogame design and runs a research lab dedicated to building tools to help designers and audiences make sense of the vast spaces of possible experience to be found within interactive software. He’s building a search engine that can look across the content of interactive media, but crawling, indexing, and retrieving moments of interaction is turning out to be much harder than he imagined. -->
