CS 134 COVID-19 Guidelines

The course's COVID-19 guidelines are outlined below.

Background

As we enter 2024, many aspects of our daily lives have returned to pre-pandemic norms. However, it's important to recognize that COVID-19 continues to circulate in our community, with occasional surges in cases. While we've made significant progress in managing the virus, it's still prudent to consider certain precautions, especially in shared spaces like our computer lab.

COVID-19 remains a concern for some members of our community. Although vaccinations have greatly reduced the severity of most cases, some individuals who contract COVID-19 may experience a range of ongoing health issues, which can persist for varying durations.

The CDC continues to monitor post-COVID conditions, which can affect people who have had COVID-19, regardless of the severity of their initial illness. While the likelihood of severe long-term consequences has decreased, it's still a consideration for public health.

Given these factors, CS 134 encourages sensible precautions while balancing the desire for a return to normalcy.

COVID-19 Guidelines for CS 134

Mask-Wearing Recommendations

While masks are no longer required in CS 134, we strongly encourage students to consider wearing them, especially during periods of increased case numbers in the community. High-quality masks (e.g., N95 or KN95) remain effective tools for reducing transmission risk.

If you choose to wear a mask, ensure it fits properly for maximum effectiveness. Remember, wearing a mask is a personal choice that can contribute to the overall health of our class community.

Respect for Individual Choices

We ask all students to be respectful of their classmates' personal health decisions. Some individuals may have health concerns or live with vulnerable people, influencing their choice to wear a mask. Creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all students, regardless of their masking preference, is crucial.

Shared Responsibility for a Healthy Environment

While masking is optional, we encourage everyone to be mindful of their health and the well-being of others. If you're feeling unwell, please consider attending class virtually or wearing a mask if you must attend in person.

Food and Drink in the Lab

The prohibition on food and drink in the lab remains in effect, primarily for equipment safety reasons. If you need to eat or drink, please step outside the lab.

Pair Programming Considerations

When engaging in pair programming outside the lab environment, we encourage open communication between partners about comfort levels regarding masking and other health precautions. Respect each other's preferences and work together to find mutually agreeable solutions.

Virtual Class Attendance Option

We generally expect in-person attendance for whole-class activities. However, a virtual attendance option via Zoom remains available for students who are feeling unwell or need to isolate due to COVID-19. Please inform your instructors in advance if you need to attend virtually.

Conclusion

As we navigate this new phase of living with COVID-19, our policy aims to balance a return to normalcy with sensible health precautions. We trust our students to make responsible decisions and to be considerate of their peers' well-being. By working together and remaining flexible, we can create a safe and productive learning environment for everyone in CS 134.
