Week 1 Online Lesson: Talking about NLP

  • LParrot speaking

Welcome to your first online lesson!

In general, foundational NLP theory, math, and algorithms will be covered in the lecture. Online lessons are meant to supplement lectures, not replace them. Specifically, online lessons will usually cover higher-level ideas that are connected to the lecture content. Online lessons typically fall into one of two categories:

  • NLP and Society: These lessons explore how NLP technologies impact, and are impacted by, trends and events in broader society (with a particular focus on the NLP concepts covered in the week's lecture).
  • Modern NLP Connections: These lessons discuss how the foundational NLP concepts covered in the week's lecture still play a role in modern NLP (e.g., LLMs). For these lessons, we won't go into as much technical detail as a lecture would, but you are still expected to come away from these lessons with the ability to answer conceptual questions about the content on an exam, and future lectures may make reference to the content from these online lessons.

Overall, our goal for these online lessons is to be a fun way for you to dive deeper into the concepts covered in lecture!
