The latest from those wacky Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan, this is an almost-musical loosely based on The Odyssey, of all things (and maybe Moby Dick as well). Basic plot: George Clooney, John Turturro, and the other guy are Great Depression-era escaped convicts trying to avoid recapture on their way to recovering a treasure before it is buried under a lake (that sort of thing was a problem when the TVA was in full force). Hilarity ensues.
- TracyvanCort enjoyed this movie a great deal, even more so the second time. She was in the mood for stupid, but not too stupid, and this fit the bill just right. Also, in contrast to the position they take in many of their other movies (to paraphrase some reviewer, "Look! Interesting characters in improbably funny situations!"), the Coens seemed to be genuinely sympathetic towards their protagonist in this film (hell, it was much clearer than usual who the protagonists were, and that it was okay to root for them). They also use George Clooney's pretty-boy star status to hilarious effect here, and he seems to have been a real good sport about it, so that was highly amusing as well. Finally, in case it hasn't been mentioned enough, it's an almost-musical. Tracy highly recommends the soundtrack if you like old-timey bluegrass music; it kicks ass.
- CurtisVinson saw this movie against his will and was pleasantly surprised. I agree with Tracy about their mocking George Clooney's star status; read the credits, I swear they were directly including jibes at him. The characters are all decently acted, even Clooney's, the comedy was well-timed, and the tie-in with The Odyssey . . . amusing. In general, the movie was pretty light, but a worthwhile waste of two hours or so anyways.
- KimEspinoza thought this was a great movie! Every scene is interesting and it's just so funny. The music is really fun along with the movie. George Clooney is soooo funny in this movie. The other guys are really funny too, but George Clooney is just a riot. Anyway, go buy this movie. You can.
