• I would suggest that, if we're going to do this, we not wait until the end of the semester, because of senior finals. If we're getting Cesar Chavez day off again, that might be a good weekend...-MicahSmukler

• CesarChavezDay? is on March 28, the week after SpringBreak?, and you guys do get it off. --CurtisVinson

• Keep in mind that some people may still have a class or two on CesarChavezDay?. (I did last year.) Starting in the evening of CesarChavezDay? might work well, though. Oh, and I'm definitely interested. --MichaelVrable

• Preliminary time estimate: a little under 14 hours (2.2 minutes per page*378 pages). Someone should probably check this, since I have no idea how fast I tend to read compared to other people. Also, this means that, if we were to start in the evening, most of the reading would happen overnight, which may or may not be desirable.--MicahSmukler

• LOTRaThon was 42 hours for ?? pages (my copies are at school), so it should be possible to get an estimate from that. What about starting Saturday morning/early afternoon, and reading until whenever we finish? --MichaelVrable
  • I get a little under twelve hours, using editions that look to be about the same amount of text per page. (They have 304 pages for the Silmarillion and 1086 pages for LOTR.) --ArielBarton
    • I'm not sure I'd trust a time estimate based directly on LOTR: I suspect that the Silmarillion should take longer per amount of text due to greater language complexity. It wouldn't be a bad idea to use the timings of the LOTRaThon to get some idea of how standard my reading speed is, though. My one issue with doing it on Saturday is that it might conflict with Super Movie Night; I've emailed Geoff to try and figure this out.

• Can we claim chapters yet?
  • I don't see why not. Keep in mind, though, that this is all tentative until the room is actually confirmed.

• Need we have a copy to read, or is there a dedicated copy?
  • My copy will certainly be there the whole time, and people are welcome to read from it if they wish. I suspect that there are as many copies of the book floating around the dorm as we'll need. In other words, while it seems silly to actually define a specific dedicated copy, you also needn't worry about owning a copy in order to read (though, if you do, it would be useful if you would bring it).-MicahSmukler
