Structure and Details of Our Program

Eligibility

This is a federally-funded program and requires that student participants be:

  • At least 18 years old by May 16, 2022.
  • U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents of the U.S. or its territories.
  • Students in good standing at an undergraduate degree program who will not have graduated by the end of this REU program.

Application Deadline

Students should submit their electronic application before Sunday, February 20, 2021. We ask for one letter of recommendation from a professor, advisor, or project/research mentor. We are able to be more flexible with letters of recommendation (we're letter-writers ourselves), though ideally they would be in relatively soon after 2/21/21. The NSF has recommended that some of our applicant pool be offered an “early decision” option, so we encourage applicants not to wait until the the last moment to apply — sooner is better!.

Please ask your letter-writer to email their letter to bang@cs.hmc.edu with HMC REU somewhere in the subject line. We can't say exactly when each applicant will be contacted after the application deadline, but we strive to make it as soon as possible.

Program Dates

The 10-week session will commence on May 16 2021 and run for 10 weeks until July 22,2021.

We recognize that some applicants may not have fully completed their spring term by our start date. If this is the case, please let us know and we will make every effort to accommodate you in our program. We have made this work for every such participant in the past–and there have been a good number of these cases.

Stipend / support

All student particants who complete the program will receive a $5000 REU stipend. Lodging and most travel costs for the program are also covered by the NSF REU.
