Gradebook

On this page, you can see your performance in the graded components of the course, including your scores on proficiency checks, lab check-ins, and assignments.

  • RHS Cow speaking

This page is new and improved!, now containing information about proficiency checks and homework. However, it's still the case that these grades are not synced live; they get updated periodically.

  • Cat speaking

I'm used to getting “A“s in everything. I have some “A-”s and even a “B+” here. What's going on?

  • LHS Cow speaking

A “B” grade still means that you did good work! A grade of “A“ corresponds to work that is particularly outstanding. If we always gave “A”s just for doing the basics that most people do, people who go the extra mile would never be recognized for it.

Proficiency Checks

This section shows your scores on proficiency checks. It's divided into two sections, second tries and first tries.

Second Tries

The table in this section shows your scores on proficiency checks that are have reached the second try stage. Some notes about the table:

  • The “Late” column shows an hourglass emoji (⌛️) if you used a late pass on the first try of this proficiency check group.
  • The “Overall” row shows your score across all proficiency checks.
  • The “Estimate” row guesses a plausible final score, assuming that on the final try of the proficiency checks shown, you get two thirds of the remaining points (by getting some checks completely correct and getting partial credit on others). Obviously, this is just an estimate, and your actual final score may be different, but it may help in giving you some perspective on how you're doing.

First Tries

The goal here is to show you which topics you'll need to study for a second try. For each check, if you see a magnifying-glass emoji (🔍) next to the name of the proficiency check, that means you did not get full credit on the first try and will need to try again. (Where you don't see a magnifying-glass emoji, you can consider that topic as complete, with a 100% score for that topic area.)

Homework

This section shows your scores on homework assignments. Some notes about the table:

  • Each homework assignment row combines all the parts of the assignment into one score, and shows you the combined score both as points and as a percentage. If you want to see how you did in the separately graded subparts of the assignment (e.g. Written, Coding), you can look at your scores on Gradescope.
  • The “Late” column shows an hourglass emoji (⌛️) if you used a late pass on that assignment. For any given pairing, you should have at most one late pass used across all the assignments in that pairing (i.e., HW 1, HW 2, and HW 3 share one late pass; HW 4, HW 5 and HW 6 share another late pass, etc.).
  • The “Overall” row shows your average score across all homework assignments.

Wrapping Up

Hopefully the above information is helpful in giving you a sense of how you're doing in the course. If any grade in any of these sections seems very different from what you were expecting, talk to Prof. Melissa about it in case something went awry.

  • Pig speaking

I want to know MORE! I want to know my overall grade in the course!

  • LHS Cow speaking

If you want, you can do the math yourself, but it's a bit early in the course to be calculating overall grades. The main hope in showing you this information is to help you get a holistic picture of how you're doing in the course, so you can celebrate successes and identify areas where you might want to improve.

  • Goat speaking

Meh. I didn't even read it. I have nothing to prove.

  • Hedgehog speaking

I just want to know if I'm passing, and I guess I am. In fact, I'm doing better than I thought I was, so I guess that reduces my stress a bit.
