Policies

Attendance

You are expected to attend one colloquium event per week.

Section 1

Students in Section 1 must attend colloquium synchronously, in person. You will be required to check in at the beginning of each event, and you will be required to complete a short assessment at the end of each event.

If an extenuating circumstance prevents you from attending an event, you must complete and submit a Colloquium Absence form to request an excused absence. Forms must be completed on paper and turned in to Morgan McArdle (McGregor 306) for approval. Forms should be turned in the same week as the missed event. You can print your own copy of the form from the PDF file linked above, or pick up a copy from Morgan.

Examples of extenuating circumstances include:

  • Illness
  • Family emergency
  • Religious observance
  • Required academic activity (e.g., a conference, a field trip, etc.)

In contrast, workload and personal convenience are not valid reasons for missing an event.

Not attending colloquium in person should be a rare event. If you miss more than two events, your absence form must be co-signed by your academic advisor. When an absence is approved, students should complete that event as if they were in Section 2.

Section 2

Section 2 of CS Colloquium is a special PERM-only section for students who have a scheduled academic conflict with the normal colloquium timeslot. Students in Section 2 are required to watch the recording of each event and complete the same assessment as students in Section 1. The assessment should be completed as soon as possible after the video is posted.

If the conflicting activity is cancelled for a partcular week, students in Section 2 are encouraged to attend the colloquium synchronously.

Participation

You are expected to participate in the colloquium events. This means that you should be engaged in the content of the event, and you should be respectful of the speaker and other attendees. You are welcome to ask questions during the event, and you are encouraged to ask questions after the event.

A more detailed description of colloquium etiquette is linked below, please read it:

Grading
