This talk is about a new architecture developed for appropriate use of information exchange on the Web called HTTPA (Hypertext Transfer Protocol with Accountability). In this new ‘Accountable’ architecture, the transactions that revolve around a Web resource is recorded from its creation through its modification, repurposing, and republishing with the help of the ‘Provenance Tracking Network’, a decentralized network of peers that contribute to a decentralized transaction ledger. We have two prototype applications that implement HTTPA in two distinct areas: one dealing with health information privacy in the healthcare field, and the other on copyright protection in photo sharing in the content publishing field. Through this research we found that an accountable systems architecture provides an attractive compromise where the rights and abilities of parties to control access and use information on the Web is balanced against the burden of restrictions imposed on that information.
